Brötchen, or bread roll, which are common in German cuisine, are pieces of bread, usually small and round that are commonly considered to be a side dish. Various regions of Germany have their own names for these rolls, as well as different recipes. However, the main ingredients for Brötchen are flour, water, yeast and salt.

Bread rolls are often used in the same way as sandwiches are, the most typical serving being a roll cut in half, and spread with butter or margarine. Rolls are also used for snacks, or like a hot-dog/hamburger style roll.

Bread rolls are also common and in other European countries such as Austria, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
