Carambola juice is a popular beverage in Taipei, which is made from Carambola, otherwise called Starlike fruit, widely used in Taiwanese cuisine. There are two types of this juice, sweet and sour, depending on the species of fruit used. Taiwanese people prefer more the sour taste, as it is refreshing and thirst cooling. However, it should be mentioned the fact, that carambola is a very acid fruit, and the juice resulting from it, if not diluted, may cause health trouble to those with renal malfunctions; pure fresh juice or mild diluted should not be consumed on an empty stomach. The preparation is simple: fresh fruit, water and sugar are all mixed together and served with ice cubes or minced ice in hot summer days.
