Chantilly cream or crème Chantilly is a fresh whipped cream sweetened with sugar and flavored with vanilla. According to a legend it was invented by the famous French cook Vatel. It is said that Fouquet invited king Louis XIV to the inauguration of his castle Vaux le Vicomte and for this occasion Vatel prepared a special dessert. The name of the cream appeared later, when Vatel was the cook for the Prince of Condé in his castle Chantilly. For the first time the name crème Chantilly was recorded in 1784.
The cream is a popular topping for desserts such as pie, ice cream, cupcakes, cake, and puddings.
