Filbert's Old Time Root Beer
From Mycitycuisine.org
Filbert's Old Time Root Beer is a variation of Filbert's Old Time which is a beverage company based in Chicago, Illinois. Since 1926 it bottles and distributes soft drinks, non-carbonated beverages. Known best for its namesake root beer, Filbert’s also produces 24 flavors of osoda. The company started at the turn of the century when George Filbert and family delivered milk, ice and coal to homes in the Bridgeport neighborhood by horse-drawn wagon. The family added root beer in 1926, when it became popular during Prohibition. It was manufactured in half barrels and supplied mostly to taverns across five nearby states.
The main ingredients of this beer consist of: carbonated water, sugar and/or corn sweetener, caramel color, natural and artificial aromas, sodium benzoate which is used as an artificial additive and is characterized by a dark, almost black color and cough-syrup taste. The drink can be found in many restaurants and stores in Chicago.
