Gegratineerd Witloof (Endive Gratin) is one of the most classic dishes of Belgian cuisine. It is usually consumed in wither and includes endives, flour, chicory, butter, water, garlic, milk, Gruyere cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. After endives stewed in the mix of butter and water, spices like garlic, salt and pepper are added. Then each chicory is rolled in a ham slice and placed in a baking dish. It is topped with sauce (made with butter, flour, milk, grated Gruyere cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg) and is sprinkled with grated cheese. Traditionally Gegratineerd Witloof is served with mashed potatoes.
