Glühwein or mulled wine is a traditional German drink and is considered an international one, being prepared in many countries in Europe. It is made of red wine combined with spices and served warm. In Germany this beverage is drunk during the Christmas holidays. Glühwein is drunk pure or "mit Schuss" - with a shot, which means there is rum or liqueur added. A very similar type of mulled wine is popular in the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Moldova. The oldest documented Glühwein tankard is attributed to the German nobleman and first Riesling grower of the world, Count John IV. of Katzenelnbogen around 1420.
