Herring Salad is a traditional German dish that is widely prepared in the Northern regions of this country, especially on Christmas Eve, and also in other parts of the world where herring has a good popularity in their local cuisine. The ingredients commonly used to make this salad are: herring, apples, pickles, olive oil, vinegar, sour cream, mayonnaise, ground pepper and salt. However, this recipe has acquired so many variations that the list of components is not fixed, there can be added or omitted some of them. Preparation does not take much time as the herring is either minced in a food processor or diced and combined with chopped apples, pickles, olive oil, vinegar, sour-cream or mayonnaise, salt and pepper. It is stored in a cool place before being served at table, classically complimented with slices of rye bread.
