Houbová smaženice is another popular Czech dish. Its name comes from the word "smažit" which means to fry, or the verb "míchanice" - to combine. Fried mushrooms are chopped, seasoned with salt and deep fried in batter with some fat, onion, rubbed garlic, and caraway seeds. Later, beaten eggs are added to the composition. Smaženice are usually eaten with bread, boiled potatoes, tartar sauce or mayonnaise. The dish is also a good option for vegetarians though likely not for strict vegetarians as eggs have been added. In the United States and some other countries, they are often served as an appetizer or snack.
