The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. This is a large, starchy, sweet-tasting vegetable. Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamins, such as vitamin B6 and vitamin C, as well as a good source of fiber and beta-carotene. Sweet potatoes are used all over the world in order to prepare various dishes. In the United States, sweet potatoes are often prepared as sweet potato fries or chips. The sweet potatoes fries are made by julienning and deep frying sweet potatoes, in the fashion of French fried potatoes, or by baking them. Baked sweet potatoes are sometimes offered in restaurants as an alternative to baked potatoes. They are often topped with brown sugar and butter. The sweet potato fries are considered healthier than the french fries, especially if they are baked in the oven and not deep fried. Either baked or deep-fried, this dish is rather easy to prepare, as it implies cutting the sweet potatoes into strips, toss them with olive oil and salt and cook in a pan or oven. The sweet potato fries constitute a great side dish to be served at diner time.
