Tomatoes are the only ingredient of the Tomatensalat. Vine-ripe, fresh summer tomatoes need almost nothing added to them, being consumed as a nutritional supplement. Tossing plump tomatoes into a salad created for their sweet, dewy taste brings out the best in their flavour. Its secret is in its marinade, that is made on vinegar and vegetable oil base, adding fresh ground pepper, basil, thyme and Worcestershire sauce and seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. Different herbs may be added such as dill or parsley. The salad is served cold and usually on lettuce leaves.
